Barack Obama on Rural America, Circa 2004

This video, courtesy of TalkingPointsMemo sheds some light on how Obama really views rural America.

Are we, as Democrats, going to disagree with this analysis?

I think the whole issue is Obama's unwise use of the term "cling" without qualifying it by saying that they are only clinging to those issues in the voting booth.

Obama didn't mean to imply that people cling to religion, or develop a fondness for guns when they are economically disadvantaged. He was talking about how many poor people consistently vote against their economic interest (Republican) because Republicans have been so effective at making the elections about  things like gay marriage, gun control, and religion.

It's why Democrats lose elections that they should easily win. Clinton, for piling onto Obama over this and making it a big story...is doing the GOP's work for them once again.

...sigh....and I thought the Democrats might just win this one.

Silly me.

I was hoping someone would get this (2.00 / 2)

comment up here.  One of his strengths is he does get it, he has a consistent message about what has happened to small and rural towns and how it has affected people's voting patterns.

Thanks for posting!

Fear not (2.00 / 1)

This will all blow over.  Actually, outside of MyDD, it's not that big of a deal.  It will end up being a net plus for Obama, because he speaks a truth that is quite powerful, and for people without an electoral agenda, his words are not condescending.

People will disagree, but when it comes to Obama, they've been wrong before, and they will be again.  They just don't get it, do they?

many of us understand all too well the intricacies (2.00 / 1)

of how we are being screwed by the Obamas of the world, unfortunately. They have all the power and we have none. And now they want us to elect one of them and they are telling us HE is a progressive.

Hillary Clinton has more HEART and understanding of all Americans in her little finger than Barack Obama has in his entire body.

For example, look at Barack's heathcare plan. The devil is in the details. If you get sick, you could pay MANY TIMES under Obama what you do under Clintons. THERE'S NO LIMIT! Sure, you can't be turned away. Pre-existing conditions? NO PROB - IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO MAKE IT PROFITABLE FOR THEM.. ALL OF IT, if not, SORRY..no coverage..

THEY HAVE A LOT OF NERVE...

The intricacies..we understand the intricacies of multi-thousand dollar bills for the difference between what Obama's 'affordable' plan pays and what things REALLY COST.

Read the fine print. No wonder they keep telling us again and again 'they are almost the same'.

What about the insurers increasing use of
rescission
to dump sick people?

Listen to Elizabeth Edwards.. Obama's plan is half a plan. Hillary's is MUCH BETTER.

This will be a plus for Obama. (none / 0)

Voters can tell the difference between substance and nonsense, and when they see Obama repeatedly being attacked on nonsense they sympathize.

Re: This will be a plus for Obama. (2.00 / 1)

What concerns me is how the media is framing the story. They refuse to provide any context at all, and simply repeat "Barack Obama called Pen. voters 'bitter'!".

Saying this, makes it seem like Obama was saying that rural americans are UNJUSTLY bitter or are simply feeling "sour grapes". This is the negative connotation that comes with the term "bitter", since its often used in a condescending way to refer to someone who is simply griping about their circumstances.

However, it is clear that Obama was saying that rural Americans have every right to be bitter, and was actually explaining why they SHOULD be bitter.

Just listen to how this Fox Reporter asks these voters about the controversy...(DailyKos link) ... at least their responses are encouraging.

So you think. It's not much fun dealing with an inconvenient truth is it? Better start getting used to it.

Re: Barack Obama on Rural America, Circa 2004 (2.00 / 1)

Unfortunately, it is not just on MyDD; it is all over. I have no idea how it is going to play out over time, but what is noteworthy is that this was blogged by an Obama supporter who has maxed out at $2300 in donations, and has followed him from state to state.

She said she sat on the story for two days but it bothered her so much that she posted it on huffPo. One has to think that if it bothered her so much then it may bother some undecided voters even more.

What we need to consider is this, how would it sound if it were said by a candidate you didn't support?

She has retroactive mind control powers that kept him in Revern Wright's pews and make him say foolish things about people and faith in small town America.

Re: Barack Obama on Rural America, Circa 2004 (none / 0)

Did you watch Hillary on CNN's Compassion Forum tonight?

Hillary was asked who she would turn to for moral or spiritual guidance on difficult decisions, and she responded that she would surround herself not just with people she agreed with, but also with people she strongly DISAGREED with. She stressed the importance of listening to opposing views -- and not being dismissive of them -- multiple times during her answer.

It was a great answer, and I took this as Clinton's validation of Obama's relationship with his former pastor. That is exactly the relationship that Obama had with Wright.

Tight Rope Act From Hillary (2.00 / 0)

I am from PA and most people aren't buying it....In fact talk shows have begun labeling Clinton's reaction as desperate...Even the people who thought it was poorly worded, despise the fact that Clinton is calling him an elitist....Many people who won't vote for him are basing it on experience and not their personal dislike for him..They think he is  genuine and likeable, they are really turned off at what Clinton is portraying him as...She better be careful, I feel the winds a changing.

Re: Tight Rope Act From Hillary (none / 0)

Hillary's response to Obama's comments are the worst kind of political opportunism. Hillary is in no position to label Obama an elite, and his comments are apparently not substantially different from statements that the Clintons have made in the past.

Here's Harvard's Theda Skocpol on the hypocrisy of Bittergate:

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government -- and Bill Clinton -- and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues ...This has to be one of the few times in U.S. political history when a multi-millionaire has accused a much less wealthy fellow public servant, a person of the same party and views who made much less lucrative career choices, of "elitism"!
